How Rock And Roll Made Me Accept The Gay Community
This is Pride Month in Canada and since Unity Power Force promotes anti-discrimination, I thought that I would share my own journey as a straight person, how I came to accept the gay community of LGBTQIA2+ communities. I have to admit that this was not always the case being perfectly honest.
When I was a little school kid, it was a different time when the gay community was still very much in the closet. None of my school buddies nor I really met any gay people and by the time we actually learned the very existence of them, we thought being gay was just plain weird and unnatural. So as a result, we did not accept the gay community when we were kids.
Freddie Mercury Of Queen
Then when I made it to high school, I discovered rock and roll. One of the bands that I liked was Queen and its lead singer Freddie Mercury was one of the all time greatest performers ever. I always thought that Freddie Mercury acted a bit feminine at times so I was not surprised when I learned that he was bisexual or gay. But this did not faze me as it did not stop me from continuing to be a Queen fan. It also did not stop me from being a Freddie Mercury fan either and this became the first step in my own journey to accepting the gay community.
Rob Halford Of Judas Priest
I was also a fan of another band named Judas Priest which was a heavier, more macho heavy metal band. Some years later, their lead singer, Rob Halford, came out of the closet. In this case I was a bit surprised because on the surface, Rob Halford just didn’t seem gay to me.
But the result was the same as I just didn’t care and continued to listen to Judas Priest as a fan. So this was the second case from rock and roll which influenced me to accept the gay community.
Elton John
I’ll have to throw in a third case which is Elton John whose giant body of song hits and his performances speak for themselves. I’ve always loved much of his music.
With these three big cases from the music world, I learned that somebody’s sexual orientation really did not matter. I finally realized that just because somebody’s sexual orientation is different from mine, it doesn’t affect how good that person is or what his or her heart is like.
Being gay does not prevent an individual from being a good responsible person in our community and world. In the case of the three examples from the music world above, it certainly doesn’t stop these talented musical artists from being able to do what they do.
Unity Power Force Supports Anti-Discrimination
Here’s my little video on my journey citing the same three cases above which enabled me to accept the gay or LGBTQIA2+ communities as equals in my world. This is in line with Unity Power Force as we support anti-discrimination against all people who might be different from each other.
